Parametric Study of a Long-Duration Energy Storage Using Pumped-Hydro and Carbon Dioxide Transcritical Cycles

The urgent energy transition needs a better penetration of renewable in the world’s mix. intermittency renewables requires use longer-term storage. present system uses water displacement, lined rock cavern or an aerial pressurised vessel, as virtual piston compressor and expander functions carbon dioxide heat pump cycle (HPC) organic transcritical (OTC). Within impermeable membrane, is compressed expanded by filling emptying pumped-hydro water. Carbon exchanges with two atmospheric thermal storage pits. hot fluid ice pits are charged HPC when becomes available discharged OTC electricity needed. A numerical model was built to replicate system’s losses calculate its round-trip efficiency (RTE). subsequent parametric study highlights key parameters for sizing optimisation. With expected RTE around 70%, this CO2 PHES (pumped-hydro storage) coupled PTES (pumped could become game-changer allowing efficient intermittent integrating district heating cooling networks, required cities industry future.
